Guide to Standards for Pianoforte Section Classes
These standards relate to the grade of music to be played in the class rather than any grade that the performer has achieved.
Primary Music up to Grade 2 standard
Elementary Music of Grade 3 or 4 standard
Intermediate Music of Grade 5 or 6 standard
Advanced Music of Grade 7 or 8 standard
Open Music above grade 8 standard and professionals
NB Any Competitor entered under the wrong standard above risks disqualification.
Examination Classes
Any piece or pieces set by an Examining Board for 2023/2024 as long as the time allowed, including repeats, is not exceeded.
1. Primary Time Limit – 2 mins
2. Elementary Time Limit – 3 mins
3. Intermediate Time Limit – 4 mins
4. Advanced Time Limit – 5 mins
Jazz Classes
Any piece in the Jazz Idiom
5. Primary Time Limit – 2 mins
6. Elementary Time Limit – 3 mins
7. Intermediate or Advanced Time Limit – 4 mins
Bach Classes
Any piece by Bach
8. Primary or Elementary Time Limit – 3 mins
9. Intermediate or Advanced Time Limit – 4 mins
10. Open Time Limit – 8 mins
French Classes
Any piece by a French Composer
11. Intermediate Time Limit – 4 mins
12. Advanced Time Limit – 5 mins
13. Open Time Limit – 6 mins
Sonatina and Sonata Classes
Classical, Romantic or Modern
14. Elementary – any one movement of Sonatina Time Limit - 3 mins
15. Intermediate – any one movement of Sonatina/Sonata Time Limit - 4 mins
16. Advanced – Any one movement of a Sonata Time Limit – 8 mins
17. Open – Any one movement of a Sonata Time Limit – 12 mins
Romantic Classes
Any piece by a Romantic Composer excluding Chopin
18. Intermediate Time Limit – 5 mins
19. Advanced Time Limit – 6 mins
20. Open Time Limit – 8 mins
Chopin Classes
21. Intermediate/Advanced Time Limit – 7 mins
22. Open Time Limit – 10 mins
Recital Classes
Any 2 or 3 contrasting pieces
23. Intermediate Time Limit – 7 mins

25. Open Time Limit – 20 mins
Competitors Own Choice

44. Family (not open to professionals) Time Limit – 4 mins – £12.00
45. Open Family Time Limit – 8 mins – £15.00
PIANO COLLABORATION (ACCOMPANYING)
46. Open Only the pianist will be adjudicated. No Orchestral arrangements permitted. For solo instrument or voice. The adjudicator will be looking for a lively, individual performance with an understanding of balance. Time Limit – 8 mins – £20.00
SENIOR CITIZEN - NEW FOR 2024
47. Open (any standard) At least one partner must be a senior citizen. Time Limit – 8 mins – £15.00
